The observance of  this feast started with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius  the 9th. They  formally defined  the  dogma of the  Immaculate COnception, INEFFABILIS DEUS, on 8th December holiday of 1854. A couple of years later, in 1858, the Blessed Mother gave her name to St. Bernadette at Lourdes,  saying “I am the Immaculate Conception”.
